AI is now part of the job search process, but like any tool, its value depends on how you use it. Used well, AI can strengthen your communication and preparation. Used poorly, it can lead to work that feels generic and disconnected from who you are.

Career Services is committed to helping Cedarville students learn how to use AI effectively and responsibly throughout the job search process. This includes forward-thinking guidance on ethical AI use, résumé refinement, interview preparation, and professional communication.

AI should improve your thinking, not replace it.

Using AI in Your Job Search

Many employers are integrating AI into their workflows and expect candidates to know how to use it effectively without relying on it to do their thinking for them — something that often becomes clear in interviews and follow-up questions.

According to a 2026 National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) :

  • 86% of career centers now use AI with students.
  • 90% use AI for interview preparation.
  • Nearly three-quarters report more employer conversations about AI.
  • Employers increasingly value AI literacy and the ability to use AI productively.

AI can help you work more efficiently, but it can’t replace preparation, communication, or character. As employers continue integrating AI into their workflows, students who learn to use these tools responsibly will be better prepared for a changing job market.

What AI Can (and Can't) Do

AI is most effective when used to refine and strengthen your work — not replace it.

AI can help you clarify ideas, strengthen writing, identify patterns in job descriptions, and practice communication. It can’t replace your experience, judgment, or personal voice — and employers can usually tell the difference.

As Christians, we are called to communicate truthfully and steward technology wisely. AI can support your work, but it should never misrepresent it.

If you can’t explain it in an interview, it shouldn’t be on your résumé.

A Simple Process You Can Use Anytime

No matter how you use AI — whether for a résumé, interview prep, or networking — the same basic process applies.

Start with your own thinking, even if it’s rough. Bring a draft, outline, or a few ideas to work from, then use AI to improve clarity, tone, or structure. Review the results carefully and make sure the final version still reflects your voice and experience.

Don’t start with AI — bring something it can improve.

Practical Ways To Use AI in Your Job Search

The examples below show how AI can support different parts of the job search process. Used properly, it strengthens your communication rather than replacing your thinking or effort.

Using AI To Improve Your Résumé

Your résumé should begin with your real experience. From there, AI can help you communicate that experience more clearly and effectively.

After writing a résumé bullet, you might use AI to make it more concise, specific, or results-oriented. It can also help identify measurable impact and strengthen action verbs without changing the substance of your experience.

Sample Prompt for Résumé Improvement

Refine this résumé bullet to be more results-oriented and specific. Keep it under 20 words and include measurable impact if possible.

As you revise, make sure your experience is clear, specific, and easy for employers to understand.

Using AI To Tailor Your Résumé

One practical way to use AI is to better understand what an employer is looking for.

You can paste a job description into AI and ask it to identify the most important skills and qualifications so you can better highlight relevant experience.

Sample Prompt for Tailoring a Résumé

Based on this job description, what skills and qualifications are most important? Suggest how I could better align my existing résumé bullets to match — without adding new experience.

The goal isn’t to change your experience — it’s to highlight the experience most relevant to the role.

Using AI for Interview Prep

AI can be a helpful tool for interview preparation. Ask AI to generate likely interview questions based on a role, then practice answering them out loud. AI can also provide feedback on how clearly and effectively you communicated your response.

Sample Prompt for Interview Preparation

Act as an interviewer for this role. Ask me five behavioral questions based on this job description. After I respond, give feedback on clarity, structure, and depth.

The goal isn’t to generate interview answers with AI — it’s to help you prepare to talk about your own experiences confidently during the interview.

Using AI To Draft a Cover Letter

Writing a cover letter can feel overwhelming. Start by outlining your key ideas, then use AI to help shape them into a more structured draft.

Sample Prompt for Drafting a Cover Letter

Using this outline and job description, draft a concise cover letter. Keep the tone professional but natural. Avoid generic language.

Edit and refine the draft so that it reflects your voice and clearly explains why you’re a strong fit for the role.

Using AI for Networking Messages

AI can improve networking communication by clarifying tone, wording, and messaging.

Sample Prompt To Refine a Networking Message

Refine this networking message to sound concise, respectful, and genuine. Keep it under 100 words and avoid overly formal language.

Networking should feel specific and sincere. Before sending, remove anything that feels generic or overly polished.

Cautions and Considerations for Using AI in Your Job Search

AI should support your work, not replace honesty, effort, or personal responsibility. As you use AI in your job search:

  • Protect personal or sensitive information.
  • Verify facts and details generated by AI.
  • Check whether employers have AI-related application policies.
  • Avoid over reliance on AI-generated wording.
  • Be sure your voice and experience are present.
