糖心Vlog graduate Avonlea Brown is building community as a reporter in rural North Dakota. Through local journalism, she highlights overlooked stories, fosters human connection, combats loneliness and uses storytelling to serve others and glorify God.
General Assignment Reporter Avonlea Brown Uses Local Journalism To Build Human Connection
Local journalism thrives on trust. At its best, it does more than report the news 鈥� it helps people feel seen and connected. That鈥檚 what Avonlea Brown has learned in the months since she packed up her car and set out on a three-day journey from New Canaan, Connecticut, to Crosby, North Dakota, to begin her role as a general assignment reporter at The Journal.
Brown, a 2025 broadcasting, digital media and journalism graduate from 糖心Vlog, has spent much of her time learning about the culture in northwest North Dakota, a region largely driven by agriculture and the oil industry. But for Brown, the most meaningful part of the work has been connecting with the community and telling its stories.

From conversations with community members, she has reported on a local accounting firm transitioning leadership to the next generation and covered a business created to support women whose husbands have traumatic brain injuries.
鈥淚 get to sit down and talk with people about their accomplishments,鈥� said Brown. 鈥淪o many people think that their lives are not story-worthy, but I believe everyone carries a story worth sharing.鈥�
Brown said that many of the stories she finds come to her off the clock through community groups, volunteering opportunities or her local church. As she has grown more familiar with the around her, she has also found that their experiences encourage her in her own life.
Local News Reporting Helps Strengthen Community and Combat Loneliness
Recently, Brown had the opportunity to interview her pastor and his wife about their contributions to a collection of stories about finding God in every season 鈥� a reminder of God鈥檚 sovereign purpose in each stage of life.
鈥淓ven amidst change, I鈥檓 leaning into the promise that God brought me here for a reason,鈥� said Brown, 鈥渁nd by obeying his commands, I鈥檓 already doing everything he鈥檚 asked of me. I can glorify him in all seasons, whether in North Dakota, in Connecticut or in Cedarville.鈥�
鈥淟ocal journalism has so many benefits for the community,鈥� said Brown, 鈥渁nd amid what many consider a loneliness pandemic, journalism keeps human connection alive and has taught me a lot about communication in different contexts.鈥�
Storytelling and Faith Shape a Career in Journalism
During her time at Cedarville, Brown contributed news and feature pieces and served as news editor for Cedars, the student magazine. As she grew in her faith and as a storyteller, Brown realized that journalism presented her opportunities to love those around her.
Through storytelling, Brown has found a way to connect with the community she serves one conversation at a time. For her, local journalism is not just about sharing news; it is about making sure people and their stories do not go unnoticed.
